DEFINITIONS SERIES : on CAPITAL

April 12, 2013

7pm-9pm

Definitions: on CAPITAL explored the possible meanings that CAPITAL adopts today and may adopt in the future within the framework of the theme of the upcoming Ideas City Festival: Untapped Capital.

As the world’s resources continue to be endangered, depleted, and destroyed, we need to imagine new solutions and develop innovative approaches and practices. Rather than focusing on deficits, IDEAS CITY 2013, which took place on May 1-4, 2013, encouraged intensive examination of surplus resources that may be under-recognized or underutilized.

There are many ways of thinking about what might define ‘untapped capital,’ ranging from people and raw materials, to ideas, networks, varied resources, and modes of communication. The theme of Untapped Capital provided a touchstone for alternative thinking about new methodologies, new solutions, and new goals.

Panelists included Miguel Robles Duran (The New School), Richard Flood (New Museum), Eva Franch (Storefront), Bob Holman (Bowery Poetry Club),  Lydia Kallipoliti (Cooper Union), Toshiko Mori (GSD Harvard), Leigha Dennis & Troy Conrad (Columbia University), Lisa Phillips (New Museum) and Karen Wong (New Museum).

As part of the Definition Series, throughout the discussion guests also shared and discussed definitions of CAPITAL offered by Storefront’s online audience, network and supporters.
